âHow have things been going with my parents?â I finally worked up my nerve to ask Sam about their wellbeing as we walked next to a river, working our way out into the more suburban areas of Chicago.
âPretty good, actually. We snuck into your house and caught up with your father when he was coming back from work. You should have seen the look on his face.â Sam grinned at the memory. âHe was surprised to see Isabelle, of course, and she wasted no time lecturing him on what he did to you guys.â
âAnd what did he say to that?â I hoped that my father would believe Isabelle and her conclusions about the agency, but part of me worried that he would turn a blind eye to the nefarious goings-on at his workplace.
âOh, he believed her instantly. Seriously, it didnât take long before he was wringing his hands and wanting to call you.â Sam gave me a pat on the shoulder. âHe said that ever since you left, heâs suspected something was up with the agency, but didnât want to dig into too far in case it put you all in danger.â
âMore danger than trying to have us kidnapped?â Luke asked sarcastically.
Sam gave him an understanding nod. âHe said heâs sorry about that by the way. He didnât know what the agency really meant to do when they asked to bring Chloe in for testing.â
It was hard for me to keep the smile off my face at this news. Ever since we had gone on the run from the agency, I had been worried that my father had known what he was doing, that he wanted to bring serious harm to the Immortals, including me. It was a relief to know that he was misguided and regretted his actions. To be honest, I didnât even really care about an apology, I was just happy to know that he wasnât on the side that I had to fight against.
âWhat are they doing now then?â For a brief moment, I fantasized about being able to return to my home with both parents waiting there for me, a picture-perfect family. Except I knew that could never be a reality.
âYour dad is still working at the agency and is collecting whatever information he can about their weapons against the Immortals, and Isabelle is hiding out in the city. Thereâs another safe house Iâll take you to later where she and I are staying.â
Even though it was yet another safe house, guaranteed to be sterile and unwelcoming, I was still happy to be able to stay where Isabelle was. I hadnât had the chance to dream walk with her since leaving for Europe, so it would be nice to talk with her. Maybe she would tell me more news about my father.
âWhere are we headed anyway?â Luke changed the topic, bringing my attention to the path we were walking down. We were still near the river, but instead of high rises and suburban homes, we were surrounded by warehouses and empty asphalt parking lots.
